The event will include:

  • a variation of speakers

  • the winners of our Black History Month: Art Competition whom will be awarded their prizes

  • networking opportunity with women across the borough

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS

Katy Thompson

A Waltham Forest Women’s Network (WFWN) representative, Katy Thompson will be facilitating the event. At the young age of 12 is where is all started for Katy. As a Waltham Forest Young Advisor, is where her love for speaking finally reached a level of appreciation instead of being a classroom disturbance. Through this role, Katy built up her confidence as well as her written and verbal communication skills which armed her to become the woman she is today. At the age of 16, she finished her GCSEs with 1 A*, 5 B's and 2 C's. Originally, in her A-Levels she achieved grades B, C and D. By the time she was 19, Katy fell pregnant with her daughter: Meilia Rose. Katy decided to retake her A levels and while 8 months pregnant, she achieved an amazing A*, A and C. After her daughter had turned 1, Katy returned to the Young Advisors Team which is where the position of StreetBase Coordinator came up. Currently, aged 22, Katy is a proud and independent mother; a passionate coordinator; an aspiring councillor and an asset to the team at WFWN.

Tracey Louis-Fernand

Tracey, the founder of Mothering the Mother, a perinatal support service providing antenatal sessions; attendance at labour and births, infant feeding support and postnatal support, Tracey will be conducting a short relaxation exercise at the beginning of the session. Tracey is immensely proud to be a doula and birth coach.

Hibo Wardere

A campaigner against female genital mutilation (FGM), an author, and public speaker, Hibo Wardere will be talking about her life as a black female author. Fleeing Somalia as a teenager during the Somali Civil War, Hibo resides in Walthamstow where she educates many about FGM and volunteers her time at a local food bank. Having collaborated with our team at WFWN on many occasions, we look forward to learning more about Hibo and her journey to where she is now.

Kizzy Gardiner

As the first ever locum MP, Kizzy Gardiner covered for Stella Creasy, Walthamstow’s MP whilst she was on maternity leave. Making an impression on the local community, we’ve invited Kizzy to speak about her journey as a black woman in politics. She has over a decade of experience in the charity sector and is currently working in International Development as the Head of UK Giving & Engagement at ShelterBox. Kizzy is a Walthamstow local; a Sell or Swap addict; a mum to a young, disabled child and completing a part-time MSc in Psychology.
