Women Empowerment Event with Hibo Wardere

Join WFWN and Hibo Wardere for the third Empowerment Event with an amazing lineup of inspiring speakers.

An evening of inspiring women ready to share their stories, this event is one that is not to be missed. The speakers are as followers:

Carolyn Axtell

A community development practitioner, cancer survivor, founder of JoyRiders London women’s cycling and empowerment organisation and co-founder of Fatima Elizabeth Phrontistery (madrasa) cycling club, Carolyn is passionate about social justice and supporting women of different communities to come together to learn from and be inspired by one another.Carolyn will be speaking about her different journeys: from years of chronic ill-health to optimal well-being; from downtrodden double-buggy pushing mum to liberation through cycling, and her spiritual journey spanning 20 years.

Jane Brueseke

Half German, quarter Swedish, conceived in South Africa, born in London and living in Waltham Forest for the past 26 years - Jane has two sons born in Whips Cross Hospital and a partner she has known for 39 years. Jane is an experienced Youth Engagement practitioner. Having worked for the local council for almost 22 years and gaining a First Class Honours in her degree for her dissertation about gangs on the Beaumont estate in Leyton, she is also a founding member and youth lead for the Violent Crime prevention Board, chaired by Dr. Neville Lawrence and Dr. Angela Herbert, that meets monthly at Scotland Yard. Jane is also a network advisor for the Young Advisors national charity, a founding trustee and vice chair and secretary of local charity the South Leytonstone Area Development Association and a director of Power Up Community Fitness, a charitable Interest Company diverting young people away from youth violence into fitness and other positive activities.

Saira Mir

Born in Kampala, Uganda to parents of Pakistani descent, Saira’s early childhood was mostly nomadic. In 1968 the family of ten relocated to the North of England, where they experienced both kindness and discrimination as a family of migrants. Now based in East London, Saira is an integral part of several voluntary organisations and faith institutions including Faizan-e-Islam Centre of Excellence.In recent years her recognition as a true community leader has grown, resulting in working closely with local authorities to support Syrian Refugee families. In 2013 Saira founded PL84U AL-SUFFA, an award winning charity, dedicated to providing a hot meal and company for the elderly, homeless and people in need (all faiths and none.) Following this, she was soon awarded Muslim Woman of the Year.PL84U has greatly expanded over the years and in 2017 they were awarded a £5,000 cash prize as the bronze medallists, in the World Interfaith Harmony Week awards, received in Jordan from HM King Abdullah II. Saira continues to organise regular fundraising and community building events, whilst managing day-to-day operations for PL84U AL- SUFFA and remaining a point of contact for Faizan-e-Islam Centre of Excellence.

Katy Thompson

Aged 12 is where is all started for Katy. Katy became a Waltham Forest Young Advisor where her love of speaking finally reached a level of appreciation instead of being a classroom disturbance. Through this role Katy built up her confidence as well as her written and verbal communication skills which armed her to become the woman she is today.At age 16 she finished her GCSEs with 1 A*, 5 B's and 2 C's. In her A levels she got a BCD. By the time she was 19 Katy fell pregnant wth her daughter - Meilia Rose. katy decided to retake her A levels and while 7/8 months pregnant acheived an amazing A*, A and C.After her daughter had turned 1 - Katy returned to the Young Advisors Team which is where the position of Streetbase Coordinator came up. Now aged 22, Katy is a proud and independent mother, a passionate coordinator and an aspiring councillor. But her journey is far from the end.
